Korea’s gaming industry, fourth largest in the world, but lacks top 10 players

No Korean names are included in the world’s top 10 ranking even though Korean game industry is the world’s fourth largest in terms of revenue.

According to the Korea Creative Content Agency, revenue of Korean gaming publishers and suppliers totaled $5.76 billion as of October, fourth largest after $34.4 billion of China, $31.53 billion of the U.S. and $17.71 billion of Japan.

Behind Korea were Germany ($4.98 billion) and the U.K. ($4.73 billion). This year’s global gaming market is estimated at $134.9 billion, up 10.9 percent from last year.

China's Tencent was the top seller with $10.18 billion of June. Japan's Sony came second with $6.13 billion. Apple and Microsoft of the U.S. ranked third and fourth with respective sales of $4.39 billion and $4.19 billion

In terms of Google Play sales, Korean game publisher Netmarble was fifth with $286 million behind Sweden’s King, Finland’s Supercell, Japan’s Bandai Bamco and Russia’s Playrix.

There were no Korean game firms in the top 10 sales through Apple's App Store.

Meanwhile, Korea’s G-Star exhibition was the fifth largest among global gaming shows, drawing 529 exhibitors and 235,000 visitors.
