LG Electronics Inc. has opened a food science laboratory at research and development center in Changwon, its home appliances manufacturing base in South Gyeongsang Province, Korea, according to the company Monday.

The electronics maker said the food science laboratory will study on various food-related projects ranging from advancing food storage technology to developing new cooking techniques to offer greater value to its white goods customers. Its engineers will cooperate with scientists from the country’s top school Seoul National University and state-run R&D labs.

The company expects the food science lab to help developing better home appliance products. It currently makes various kitchen appliance including refrigerator, cooktop and microwave oven on top of other consumer electronics products.

LG Electronics has been accelerating effort to differentiate home appliance technology. It opened a water science research lab at its Changwon R&D center in February and air science lab at Gasan R&D center in Seoul in October.
