South Korea’s leading wireless carrier SK Telecom Co. launched a task force with five Asian telecoms companies to strengthen cooperation for 5G mobile edge computing (MEC) technology.

The company announced Monday that it will lead the task force consist of Singapore’s Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel), the Philippines’ Globe Telecom, Taiwan’s Taiwan Mobile, Hong Kong’s HKT and PCCW Global. They are all members of Bridge Alliance, a business alliance of Asia Pacific’s most influential telecos.

MEC is a core technology for 5G network that enhances performance of ultra-low latency services such as cloud gaming, autonomous driving and vehicle control. SKT will provide its advanced technology to the task force members who plan to commercialize 5G network within this year, and accelerate the development of MEC technologies and services in cooperation with them.

The company said the partnership will help Korea to lead the 5G MEC ecosystem in Asia and expand exports of 5G-related technologies and services to the broader Asian nations.
