사이판이 태풍으로 고립됐을(be isolated) 때 발 묶인(be stranded) 한국인 관광객이 1800명에 달했다. 성수기(peak season)가 아니어도 연중 세계 곳곳(all over the world throughout the year) 한국인 없는 곳이 없다. 그만큼 지구촌의 덜 알려진 법률(lesser-known laws)도 알아둘 필요가 생겼다.

싱가포르에서 담배를 피우거나 껌을 씹다 적발되면(be caught smoking or chewing gum) 벌금을 내야 한다는(pay a fine) 건 이미 잘 알려진 사실. 휴대폰을 멋대로 아무 와이파이에나 접속하는(arbitrarily access a Wi-Fi without authorization) 것도 해킹으로 간주돼 처벌을 받는다(be brought to book).

태국에선 전자담배가 불법이다. 소지하기만 해도 법에 저촉된다(be against the law). 피우지 않았더라도 10만 바트(약 350만원)의 벌금이 부과된다. 아랍에미리트연합에선 욕을 하거나 저속한 몸짓을 할(swear or make rude gestures) 경우, 음란 행위로 간주해(be considered obscene acts) 투옥되거나 추방된다(be jailed or deported).

터키는 국기를 모독하거나(insult the national flag) 화폐를 훼손 또는 찢는(deface or tear up currency) 행위를 범죄로 규정한다. 최저 6개월, 최고 3년 징역형에 처한다. 크로아티아에선 남자도 해수욕장이나 수영장이 아닌 곳에서 상반신을 드러낸 수영복 팬티 차림으로 돌아다니다가는(walk around wearing swimming shorts without a top) 즉석 벌금형을 받는다(face a fine on the spot).

스페인에선 산불을 내면(cause a forest fire) 의도한 것이 아닐지라도(even if unintentional) 형사 범죄로 다뤄진다(be treated as a criminal offense). 그리스에선 엉덩이를 내보이는 짓을 포함한 상스러운 행위(indecent behavior including mooning)를 할 경우 현장에서 체포하며(be arrested on the spot), 벌금 또는 징역형에 처한다. 바베이도스 등 카리브해 국가 대다수는 군인 옷과 비슷한 위장복 착용을 일절 금한다(ban the wearing of camouflage clothing).

스리랑카에서 부처 그림이나 공예품을 함부로 대했다가는 낭패를 본다(end in tears). 부처 조각상 앞에 서서 사진을 찍으면(pose for photographs standing in front of a statue of Buddha) 거액의 벌금을 물거나 감방 신세를 지게 된다(land you with a hefty fine or in jail). 눈에 띄는 부처 문신이 있는(have visible tattoos of Buddha) 경우엔 입국이 거부되고 추방된다(be refused entry and face deportation).

미국 뉴욕시는 지하철에서 옆 칸으로 이동하는 것을 금지하고 있다(prohibit passengers from moving between neighboring cars). 벌금 75달러를 부과한다. 객차 내 승객의 안전과 상호 편의(mutual convenience)를 위한 규정이다.
