태블릿용 OLED 디스플레이 시장은 애플의 아이패드 프로 시리즈의 수요에 힘입어 2024년부터 다시 성장할 것으로 예상된다. 2024년 2월부터 LG 디스플레이와 삼성 디스플레이는 2024년 2분기에 출시 된 애플 아이패드 프로 시리즈 (11인치 및 13인치)의 OLED 패널을 공급을 시작했다.
옴디아에서 디스플레이 시장조사를 담당하고 있는 강민수 (Jerry Kang)[https://omdia.tech.informa.com/authors/jerry-kang ] 수석연구원은 "애플은 유리기판과 박막인 캡슐레이션이 특징인 하이브리드 OLED를 아이패드 프로 시리즈에 사용한다"면서 "하이브리드 OLED는 디스플레이는 면적이 커질 경우 플렉시블 OLED에 비해 더 안정적인 수율과 낮은 제조 비용을 달성할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 또한, 하이브리드 OLED는 리지드 OLED보다 얇고 가벼워서 전자 회로와 배터리 탑재에 필요한 더 넓은 설계 공간을 제공할 수 있다"고 말했다.
지난 10년 동안 태블릿 PC에 채용된 거의 모든 OLED 디스플레이는 스마트폰 OLED 디스플레이와 유사하게 리지드 OLED 와 RGB 단일 OLED 스택 기술을 이용하여 제조되었다. 그러나, 애플은 2017년부터 아이폰 시리즈에 플렉시블 OLED를 사용해 왔기 때문에, 보다 혁신적인 OLED 구조를 통해 아이패드 시리즈에 OLED 디스플레이의 성능을 향상시키고 있는 것으로 보인다.
강 민수 수석연구원은 " 애플은 아이패드 프로 시리즈에 R/G/B OLED 발광 소재가 2개 층 들어간 RGB 탠덤 OLED 스택을 적용한다"면서 "RGB 탠덤 OLED 스택은 RGB 단일 OLED 스택에 비해 이론적으로 밝기는 약 2배, 수명은 4배를 구현하는 것이 장점이다. 2018년부터 차량용 OLED에 RGB 탠덤 OLED 스택이 탑재돼왔지만, 이번을 계기로 보다 폭넓게 채택될 것으로 예상된다"고 말했다.

Omdia: OLED display demand for tablet PC will grow to 35 million units by 2031
LONDON May 9, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- New research[https://omdia.tech.informa.com/advance-your-business/displays ] from Omdia[https://omdia.tech.informa.com/ ] indicates shipments of OLED displays for tablet PCs are expected to increase to 35.0 million units by 2031. Notably, the shipment share of hybrid OLEDs for tablet PCs is expected to rise significantly in this timeframe, reaching 85.1%.
The OLED display market is forecasted to experience renewed growth from 2024, primarily driven by the demand of Apple's iPad Pro series. From February 2024, LG Display and Samsung Display have been supplying their OLED panels for the Apple iPad Pro series (11-inch and 13-inch), which was launched in the second quarter of 2024.
"Apple utilizes hybrid OLED for the iPad Pro series which is characterized by a glass substrate and thin-film encapsulation," said Jerry Kang, Research Manager in Omdia's Displays research practice[https://omdia.tech.informa.com/authors/jerry-kang ]. "The advantages of hybrid OLED include achieving a more stable yield rate and lower manufacturing costs compared to flexible OLED used to manufacture large sized displays. Essentially, the hybrid OLED is thinner and lighter than rigid OLED, offering more space for other electronic components and the device's battery.
For the past decade, almost all OLED displays for tablet PCs were manufactured using rigid OLED and RGB single OLED stack technology, similar to smartphone OLED displays. However, Apple has been utilizing flexible OLED for its iPhone series since 2017. As a result, Apple seems to be enhancing the performance of OLED displays for its iPad series with the innovative OLED structure.
"Apple also applies RGB tandem OLED stack for the iPad Pro series featuring two layers of each R/G/B OLED emitting materials," Kang said. "The advantages of RGB tandem OLED stack are to achieve approximately twice the brightness and four times the lifetime theoretically, compared to the RGB single OLED stack. While RGB tandem OLED stack has been deployed in automotive OLED since 2018, its adoption is expected significantly increase with this opportunity."
Omdia forecasts that the hybrid OLED structure and RGB tandem OLED stack for iPad Pro will serve as a catalyst for other device brands and panel suppliers. This will lead to the rise of various technology combinations in OLED display. Consequently, these developments will drive competition in the OLED display market for next decade.
