어느 욕심 많은 우유 판매업자(greedy milk vendor)가 정직하지 않은 방법들로(through dishonest means) 큰 부자가 됐다(become very wealthy).
그는 고객(customer)에게 우유를 배달해주려면(do a milk round) 매일 배로 강을 건너야(cross a river daily by boat) 했는데, 많은 이윤을 취하기 위해(in a bid to make a large profit) 배달 가는 길에(on the way going on a delivery) 우유에 강물을 섞어(mix the water of the river with the milk) 양을 세 배로 늘렸다(increase the quantity by three times). 우유에 물을 더해서(add water in milk) 적은 양의 우유로 훨씬 더 많은 이익을 챙겼던(earn a lot more profit with less amount of milk) 것이다.
어느 날(one day) 그는 아들 결혼식을 치르려고(in order to celebrate the wedding of his son) 고객으로부터 우유 대금을 받으러 다녔다(go around collecting the dues). 그렇게 받아 모은 큰돈으로(with a large amount of money) 결혼식에 필요한(be needed for the marriage) 값비싼 옷과 번쩍번쩍 빛나는 금 장신구를 잔뜩 샀다(purchase plenty of expensive clothes and glittering gold ornaments).
그런데 배를 타고 강을 건너 돌아오던 중 배가 강 한가운데서 갑자기 뒤집혔다(capsize all at once in the middle of the river). 그러는 바람에 많은 돈을 주고 구입한 모든 물건(all his costly purchases)이 순식간에 강물 속으로 사라져 버렸다(be swallowed by the river in a flash). 우유 장사꾼은 헤엄쳐 나와 간신히 목숨을 구했지만(barely escape death), 귀중품을 모두 잃은 슬픔으로 어떤 말도 할 수 없었다(be speechless with grief).
잠시 후 강둑에 앉아 큰 소리로 울기 시작했는데(start crying loudly while sitting on bank of the river), 강에서 이런 목소리가 들려왔다. “울지(weep) 마라. 네가 잃어버린 건 고객들을 속여서 벌어들인(earn through cheating your customers) 부당 이익(illicit gains)이었으니 억울해할 것 없다. 네가 우유에 섞었던 물이 물로 돌아간 것이다. 네가 저지른 부정직의 결과(result of your dishonesty)다.”
☞부정한 방법(wrong methods)으로 번 돈은 결코 영원히 남아있지 않는다. Money earned by wrong methods will never remain for ever.
