North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has received a personal letter from U.S. President Donald Trump, North Korean media outlets said Sunday. After reading the letter, Mr. Kim said with satisfaction that he would seriously contemplate the interesting content of the letter. This is the first time that the two leaders have exchanged personal letters since the collapse of a second summit between Kim and Trump in Hanoi in February.

Experts said the exchange of letters between the two leaders renewed hopes for a resumption of denuclearization negotiations. It is noteworthy whether the letter diplomacy between the leaders would help break the deadlock over the North’s denuclearization.

Pyongyang’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) and the party daily Rodong Sinmun reported Sunday that Trump had written a personal letter to Comrade Kim Jong-un, who was satisfied with its ‘excellent content’.

“Chairman Kim said that he would seriously contemplate the interesting content” and appreciated Trump’s “political judging faculty and extraordinary courage,” the report said.

The report gave no further details about the content of the letter or when it was sent and received. The letter might be in answer to a letter Kim sent to Trump recently in time for the anniversary of their first-ever summit in Singapore.

The fact that the North Korean media outlets reported Trump’s letter significantly and assessed it positively indicates that the North is trying to break the deadlock in denuclearization negotiations. In particular, it’s eye-catching that the North Korean leader revealed he would take some time to reflect on what was said in the letter, which he said was ‘interesting’.
