‘Asian Games’, ‘BTS’ most searched by Koreans in ‘18

The Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang where South Korea won gold in football and boy band BTS that made K-pop history by peaking at U.S. Billboard charts topped as the most searched topic and figures for Koreans on mobile and internet platforms.

According rankings by Korea’s dominant chat platform Kakao and portal site Daum under its arm, the 2018 Asian Games held in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia, was the most searched issues this year, followed by the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. The 2018 Russia World Cup grabbed the seventh place.

Other than sporting events, typhoon Soulik that had hit the nation in August was the third most searched topic, followed by inter-Korean summit, June 13 local elections and share prices of Samsung Biologics whose stock transactions had been briefly suspended and resumed due to accounting fraud charges. The MeToo movement that led to a flood of exposures on sexual harassment and assaults ranked eighth, and minimum wage hike at ninth.

K-pop superstar BTS topped the list for most searched people, followed by Lee Jae-myung, Gyeonggi Province governor who is charged with numerous allegations including violation of election law and adultery with a local actress. The most searched word was Naver, trailed by YouTube and weather.
