In a joint press conference with Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Kyung-wha on May 11, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, "If North Korea takes bold action to quickly denuclearize, the United States is prepared to work with North Korea to achieve prosperity on the par with our South Korean friends." Secretary Pompeo also said, "If Chairman Kim (Jong-un) chooses the right path, there is a future brimming with peace and prosperity for the North Korean people." It is notable how Pompeo, who has led the prior negotiations for the summit with North Korea as one of President Trump's closest aides, used the word "prosperity" twice when referring to North Korea. This suggests the possibility that North Korea and the U.S. may have discussed in depth the lifting of sanctions and economic compensations as well as the guarantee of the regime뭩 safety, if North Korea achieved denuclearization at a level satisfying the United States during Pompeo's stay in North Korea. Some experts also suggest that the U.S. may have in mind measures to lift its individual sanctions or revise U.S. legislation that has prevented North Korea from borrowing money from international organizations and foreign companies from investing in North Korea, if North Korea reaches a certain stage in denuclearization.
