South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean Co. said Thursday that it won an order from a European shipper to build six large liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel container ships. The shipper‘s name and other details remain unknown.
The order is worth 1.69 trillion won ($1.25 billion), equivalent to 22.9 percent of the company’s sales in 2023, and the achievement marks the first container ship order for Hanwha Ocean in nearly three years since January 2022.
In a statement published on Thursday, Hanwha Ocean will build six 15,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) LNG dual-fuel container ships at its dockyard located in Geoje and deliver them by the end of 2028.
Hanwha Ocean has bagged $7.35 billion worth of orders to build a total of 37 vessels to date, including 17 LNG carriers and LNG-FSRUs, seven very large crude carriers (VLCCs), six container ships, two ammonia carriers (VLACs), and three specialty vessels.
