지난해 11월 사망자 수가 출생아 수를 앞지르며 같은 달 기준 사상 처음으로 인구가 자연 감소했다. 저출산 고령화 현상이 가속화되면서 '인구 절벽'이 현실화하고 있는 것이다.
South Korea officially is thinning, reporting first-ever natural population decline in November as death outpaced births and on path to register first annual reduction this year.
30일 통계청이 발표한 '2019년 11월 인구동향'에 따르면 지난해 11월 사망자수는 1년 전보다 5.1% 증가한 2만5438명으로 집계됐다. 이는 월별 통계 집계가 시작된 1983년 이후 최대다. 인구 1천명당 연간 사망자 수를 뜻하는 조사망률은 5.9명이었다.
According to data released by Statistics Korea on Thursday, a total of 25,520 Koreans died in November, up 2.0 percent from a year earlier and the highest for the month since the data was tracked in 1983. The crude death rate, or the number of deaths per 1,000 people, was 5.9.
반면 지난해 11월 출생아 수는 전년 같은 기간보다 1482명(-5.9%) 감소한 2만3819명으로 집계됐다. 이는 11월 기준으로 역대 최저 수준이다. 출생아 수는 2016년 4월부터 작년 11월까지 44개월 연속으로 매월 전년 동월 대비 최소 기록을 갈아치우고 있다. 이에 따라 지난해 연간 출생아수는 30만명대에 간신히 턱걸이를 할 것으로 전망된다.
On the contrary, the number of newborns totaled 23,819, shrinking 5.9 percent from a year earlier and set a new November record low since 1981 when such data began tracked. It was the 44 month in a row for the figure to hit new low. The statistics bureau projected the number of births for full 2019 to stop at around 300,000.
인구 1000명당 연간 출생아 수를 뜻하는 조출생률은 5.6명으로 역시 11월 기준으로 2000년 집계 이래 최소치였다. 11월 기준 조출생률이 5명대로 떨어진 것은 처음이다. 출생은 계절 등의 영향을 받기 때문에 통상 같은 달끼리 비교한다.
The crude birth rate was 5.6 per 1,000 people, which is the lowest for November since 2000. It is the first time that the figure to fall below 6 in November. Birth rate is usually compared against the same month of a year as it swings around season.
이에 따라 인구는 11월 기준으로는 처음으로 감소세로 돌아섰다. 자연증가분(출생아-사망자)은 -1천619명, 자연증가율은 -0.4%에 달했다. 인구 자연 증가분은 인구가 자연 변동에 의하여 늘어나는 수치로, 출생자수에서 사망자수를 뺀것이다.
With crude birth rate falling below death rate, the country recorded its first natural demographic decline for the month of November. Death exceeded the number of live births by 1,619 and resulted in the rate of natural decrease of 0.4 percent. Natural demographic change reflects the number of people born into a country and deaths to exclude changes from migration.
통계청은 "올해에는 연간으로도 인구가 감소세로 전환할 가능성이 있다"고 말했다.
The statistics bureau said the population for the entire 2020 is also likely to record its first decline.
