The Europeans also undertook many foolish “big green” projects that failed to reduce CO₂ emissions and made the cost of energy non-competitive with the rest of the world. At the same time, the United States embraced fracking, allowing it to move to cleaner energy (natural gas) and reduce both CO₂ emissions and electricity costs. Modern Europe is the result of the denial of physics, biology and micro-economics by too many politicians and two generations of ignorant voters.
The United States is now growing at more than twice the rate of Europe and is enjoying full employment. In fact, there is no big developed country that is even close to the United States in terms of economic performance. China continues to do well, but despite very rapid economic growth, its per capita income is still less than a fourth of the United States. China has a long way to go ― particularly in the modernization of its financial system ― which is still largely state-owned.
As an American, it is disappointing to see how many U.S. politicians (mainly Democrats) have studied the causes of European stagnation, but are advocating many of the same policies that are destroying Europe.
What Europe, and the U.K. in particular, needs is a new Margaret Thatcher. A person clear-eyed enough to see what needs to be done, and then the toughness and strategic sense to deliver.

세계의 다른 몇몇 지역과 마찬가지로 유럽은 아기를 갖지 않음으로써 글자 그대로 자살을 하고 있다. 지금 대부분의 유럽 국가들은 출산율이 인구 증가는 고사하고 인구의 안정 유지에 필요한 수준을 훨씬 밑돌고 있다. 노인들을 돌보는 상대적 부담에다가 인구 감소가 추가되고 있다. 숫자가 늘어나는 은퇴인구를 부양할 근로인구가 줄어드는 것이다. 유지가 불가능한 하향 추세가 진행 중이다.
유럽인들은 또한 어리석은 ‘대규모 녹색’ 사업계획에도 착수했다. 녹색 사업은 탄산가스 방출 축소에 실패했고 에너지 가격을 여타 세계와 경쟁할 수 없도록 만들었다. 그와 동시에 미국은 수압파쇄공법을 채택하여 보다 청정한 에너지인 천연가스로 전환하는 것이 가능해져서 탄산가스 방출과 전기요금을 줄이고 있다. 너무나 많은 정치인들과 2세대에 걸친 무지한 유권자들이 물리학과 생물학 및 미시경제를 거부한 결과가 오늘날의 유럽이다.
미국은 지금 유럽 성장률의 2배 이상으로 성장 중이며 완전고용을 누리고 있다. 경제적인 성과 면에서 미국에 근접이라도 한 선진 대국이 없는 것이 현실이다. 중국은 계속 잘하고 있지만 매우 빠른 경제성장에도 불구하고 중국의 1인당 국민소득은 여전히 미국의 4분의 1 이하다. 중국은 갈 길이 멀다. 특히 자국의 금융체제 현대화가 그렇다. 이 부문은 여전히 국가가 대부분을 소유하고 있다.
미국의 너무나 많은 정치인, 주로 민주당원들이 유럽의 침체를 연구해 왔으나 유럽을 파괴하고 있는 동일한 정책의 다수를 옹호하는 것을 보는 것은 한 미국인으로서 실망스러운 일이다.
유럽 특히 영국에 필요한 것은 새로운 마거릿 대처다. 해야 할 일이 무엇인지 볼 수 있을 정도로 현실적이고 이를 관철할 굳은 의지와 전략적 감각을 가진 사람이 필요하다.
