But we seem to forget that the United States is the home of innovation. Nearly every type of product that has improved the quality of life the world over ? from medicine to computers to entertainment ? has its roots in the United States.
The freedom we enjoy to dream, to act and to think has brought about cures for diseases, aid to the disabled and the elderly, and the widespread distribution of necessities that once were luxuries.
Henry Ford created the assembly line that made the automobile affordable to all Americans. Dr. Jonas Salk created a vaccine for polio, the plague of the early 20th century. Bill Gates created the operating system for computers that made them usable and accessible to all the peoples of the world. Americans were the first to reach the moon, invent air conditioning, transplant organs, and develop many other technologies and advancements.
By contrast, in nations where liberty is curtailed or controlled by government, innovation is stymied. What innovations or inventions that we use today came from the old Soviet Union? From Cuba? Or North Korea?
It’s not out of line to say that the United States has directed the course of human history more significantly and positively than any other nation in the history of the world. The key to our success is, always has been and always will be our liberty. The liberty we enjoy unshackles the mind and nourishes creativity.
The Founders had a burning faith in the ability of ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things once they were freed from the fetters of Big Government.
미국은 기술혁신의 본고장이다

뉴스에 주의를 기울이는 사람들은 여러 가지 문제에 관한 장황한 설명을 익히 듣는다. 그리고 그들은 그 외의 다른 것도 익히 듣는다. 그런 문제를 바로잡기 위해 연방정부의 어떤 계획에 납세자들의 돈을 더 많이 지출하라는 요청이다.
그러나 우리는 미국이 기술혁신의 본고장이라는 사실을 망각하는 듯이 보인다. 약품에서부터 컴퓨터와 오락물에 이르기까지 전 세계적으로 삶의 질을 향상시킨 거의 모든 타입의 제품이 미국에 뿌리를 두고 있다.
우리가 꿈을 꾸고 행동을 하고 생각을 할 때 누리는 자유가 각종 질병의 치료법과 장애인과 노인의 보조기구 및 한때 사치품이었던 여러 가지 생활필수품의 광범한 보급을 실현했다.
헨리 포드는 모든 미국인이 살 수 있는 가격의 자동차를 만드는 조립라인을 창설했다. 조너스 솔크 박사는 20세기 초의 전염병이었던 소아마비 백신을 만들었다. 빌 게이츠는 컴퓨터의 작동체제를 만들어 전 세계 사람이 컴퓨터에 접근하여 이용할 수 있게 했다. 미국인들은 달에 처음 도달했고 에어컨을 발명했으며 인체의 장기를 이식했고 다른 많은 기술을 개발하고 발전을 실현했다.
그에 반해 자유가 정부에 의해 축소되거나 혹은 통제되는 여러 나라에서는 기술혁신이 방해받는다. 우리가 오늘날 사용하는 기술혁신과 발명 가운데 어느 것이 구소련이나 쿠바 혹은 북한에서 왔는가.
미국이 세계 역사상 그 어떤 나라보다 인류의 역사 진로를 더 중요하고 긍정적으로 이끌었다고 말해도 과언이 아니다. 우리의 성공의 열쇠는 예나 미래나 항상 우리의 자유다. 마음의 속박을 풀고 창의성을 육성할 때 우리가 누리는 바로 그 자유다.
개국의 아버지들은 큰 정부의 속박에 해방되기만 하면 비범한 일을 성취할 수 있는 평범한 사람들의 능력을 열렬히 믿었다.
