Promoting practical exchanges and cooperation in ports, investment trade, tourism, culture, and sports

Busan City announced that at 11:30 AM local time on the 20th, it signed a Friendship and Cooperation Agreement with Genoa, Italy, the largest port city in Italy and a central hub of Mediterranean shipping.

The signing ceremony took place at Genoa City Hall, with Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon and Genoa Mayor Marco Bucci signing the agreement in person.

This agreement is a follow-up measure based on discussions from the exchange of friendly letters between Mayor Park Heong-joon and Mayor Marco Bucci in 2022. In December 2022, Mayor Marco Bucci sent a letter to Mayor Park Heong-joon proposing ways to promote exchanges and cooperation between the two cities, culminating in the signing of this agreement.

Genoa, the largest port city in Italy, is traditionally developed in shipbuilding and manufacturing. South Korea and Italy established diplomatic relations in 1884, and this year marks the 140th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. Busan and Genoa, as the largest port cities in their respective countries and with common ground in shipbuilding and manufacturing, have been cooperating in the port sector.

This agreement holds significant meaning as Busan’s first sisterhood/friendship cooperation city in Italy.

Busan City has established a strategic international exchange management plan to transform the impact of city diplomacy, gained through hosting international events, into tangible outcomes. With this agreement, the scope of city diplomacy extends to Italy.

Through this agreement, the two cities plan to promote practical exchanges and cooperation in key areas, focusing on their status as major port cities and globally renowned cities for culture, tourism, and sports.

Genoa hosts over 2 million cruise passengers annually and is home to two world-famous football clubs (Genoa CFC and UC Sampdoria) with Serie A championship experiences.

Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “With this Friendship and Cooperation Agreement with Genoa, Italy, Busan will enhance its innovation capabilities in the port sector and strengthen its urban competitiveness, moving closer to realizing Busan as a global hub city and a central city in South Korea.”

He added, “In the future, we will actively continue sustainable exchange activities with Genoa in areas such as ports, investment trade, tourism, culture, and sports.”

Meanwhile, with this Friendship and Cooperation Agreement with Genoa, Busan has signed agreements with 14 cities during the 8th term of the local government, establishing sisterhood/friendship relations with a total of 51 cities in 41 countries.

부산시는 현지시각 20일 오전 11시 30분, 이탈리아 최대 항만도시이자 지중해 해운 중심허브 도시인 제노바시와 우호협력도시 협정을 체결했다고 밝혔다.

이번 체결식은 제노바 시청사에서 진행됐으며, 박형준 부산시장과 마르코 부찌 제노바시장이 직접 협정서에 서명했다.

이번 협정은 2022년 박형준 시장과 마르코 부찌 시장 간 우호서신 교환에서 논의된 내용을 바탕으로 한 후속 조치다.

2022년 12월, 마르코 부찌 제노바시장은 양 도시 간 교류와 협력 방안, 우호협력도시 협정 체결 제안을 담은 서신을 박형준 시장에게 보내며 실질적 협력 증진 방안을 논의했으며, 이번 협정 체결로 그 결실을 맺었다.

제노바는 이탈리아 최대 항만도시로, 전통적으로 조선업과 제조업이 발달한 도시다. 한국과 이탈리아는 1884년 수교를 맺었으며, 올해는 양국 수교 140주년을 맞이했다. 부산시와 제노바시는 양국 최대 항만도시이자 조선업과 제조업이 발달한 공통점을 바탕으로 항만 부문에서 상호 협력해 왔다.

이번 협정 체결은 부산시의 첫 번째 이탈리아 자매·우호협력도시라는 점에서 큰 의미가 있다.

부산시는 국제행사 유치 과정에서 얻은 도시외교의 파장을 실질적 성과로 이어갈 수 있도록 전략적 국제교류 관리계획을 수립했으며, 이번 협정을 계기로 이탈리아까지 도시외교 외연을 확장하게 됐다.

이번 협정 체결로, 두 도시는 양국 최대 항만도시이자 세계적인 문화, 관광, 스포츠의 도시라는 점을 바탕으로 향후 공통 분야를 중심으로 실질 교류·협력을 추진할 예정이다.

제노바시는 연간 200만 명 이상의 크루즈 승객과 이탈리아 세리에A 우승 경험이 있는 2개의 세계적인 축구 클럽(제노아 CFC, UC 삼프도리아)을 보유하고 있다.

박형준 시장은 “이번 이탈리아 제노바시와의 우호협력도시 체결을 계기로 부산이 항만 분야 혁신 역량을 높이고, 도시경쟁력을 강화하게 되어 대한민국 중추도시로서 글로벌 허브도시 부산 실현에 한 걸음 더 나아가게 됐다”고 말했다.

또한, “향후 제노바시와는 항만, 투자통상, 관광, 문화, 스포츠 등 지속 가능한 교류 활동을 활발히 이어갈 것”이라고 덧붙였다.

한편, 부산시는 이번 제노바시와의 우호협력도시 협정 체결로 민선 8기 기간 동안 14개의 도시와 자매·우호협력도시 협정을 체결해 총 41개국 51개 도시와 자매·우호협력 관계를 맺었다.
