Samsung develops next-gen chipset for 5G base stations

SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics has developed coin-sized radio frequency (RF) chipsets for 5G base stations which are smaller, lighter and less power consuming than previous ones.

Samsung said in a statement Friday that it has completed the development of its millimeter wave Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits (RFICs) and Digital/Analog Front End (DAFE) Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) which support 5G bandwidths. Samsung said it will finish developing additional chipsets which cover wider bandwidthsr.

"Our breakthroughs in 5G R&D have been the key driving forces behind the successful 5G commercial services across the U.S. and Korea in 2018, with over 36,000 5G base station shipments," Samsung's Networks Business head Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun was quoted as saying.

The new chips, which play crucial roles in the operation of base stations, are about 36 percent smaller than previous chipsets, Samsung said, adding its new chipsets would help base station makers design and build smaller stations.

Samsung has enhanced the performance of chipsets by reducing white noise and improving the linearity characteristics of the radio frequency power amplifier. The company will start the mass production of its chipsets during the first half of this year.
