[WT논평] The possibility of Israel-Iran war on Syrian soil

Iran’s aging political leadership apparently has too much time on its hands. It insists on increasingly risky foreign adventures while discontent piles up at home. Iran’s rial currency is at its lowest level against the dollar in history. Restive ethnic and religious minorities and water shortages in the provinces are causing near-daily demonstrations, and an increasingly discontented majority population of people under 25 years old are demanding domestic change. That kind of atmosphere has bred revolutions in many nations in the past.

Now, the Israelis claim to have proof of Iranian duplicity in hiding their nuclear aspirations from the rest of the world. This will likely add fuel to the Trump administration’s allegations that the nuclear agreement with Tehran is a deeply flawed deal. Despite the problems at home, the old men in Tehran insist on stirring pots of conflict in Syria, Lebanon and Yemen; they are playing a very dangerous game.

Iran wants to be seen as a champion of minority Shiite populations in the region. Supplying weapons to the Houthis in Yemen is fairly low risk; frankly, nobody in the region but the Saudis cares. Giving weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon is riskier, but so far arming Hezbollah hasn’t been seriously contested by the Israelis. Placing overt Iranian bases in Syria is another matter. The Israelis have already bombed some of the existing installations as a not-too-subtle warning to Iran of where the line in being drawn.

In such a conflict, the Iranians would be logistically overextended in Syria. Iran is separated from Syria by hundreds of miles of roads and sea lanes that the Israelis can easily interdict. The logistics situation would be dire from Day One.

이란의 노령화되는 정치 지도부는 시간이 너무 많아 주체하기 어려운 것임이 분명하다. 국내에서 불만이 쌓이는 가운데 이란 지도부는 점점 위험해지는 해외의 모험을 고집한다. 이란의 리알화는 달러와의 환율이 역사상 최저수준이다. 불만에 찬 소수인종들 및 종교집단들과 여러 지방의 물 부족이 거의 매일 데모를 촉발하며 불만이 점점 커지는 25세 이하 연령의 국민 대다수가 국내 변화를 요구한다. 그런 종류의 분위기는 과거 다른 많은 나라에서 혁명을 유발했다.

지금 이스라엘 사람들은 이란이 핵 야망을 여타 세계에 표리부동하게 숨기는 증거를 갖고 있다고 주장한다. 이런 주장은 테헤란과의 핵 협정이 심각한 결함을 지닌 거래라는 트럼프 행정부의 주장에 기름을 끼얹을 가능성이 있다. 국내의 각종 문제에도 불구하고 테헤란의 노인들은 시리아, 레바논, 예멘에서 고집스럽게 갈등을 부추긴다. 그들은 매우 위험한 장난을 하고 있다.

이란은 역내 인구 중 이슬람 소수집단인 시아파의 수호자로 보이기를 원한다. 예멘의 후티 반군에게 무기를 주는 것은 위험부담이 상당히 낮다. 솔직히, 그 지역에서 관심을 기울이는 나라는 사우디아라비아밖에 없다. 레바논의 헤즈볼라에게 무기를 제공하는 것은 위험부담이 더 크지만 헤즈볼라를 무장시키는 것에 대해 현재까지 이스라엘 측은 심각하게 이의를 제기하지 않았다. 시리아에 공공연히 기지를 설치하는 것은 또 다른 문제다. 이스라엘 측은 어디에 선이 그어져 있는지 이란에 분명히 경고하기 위해서 기존 군사시설 몇 곳을 이미 폭격했다.

그런 충돌 중 하나에서 이란 측은 시리아 내의 병참선을 무리하게 연장시킬 것이다. 이란은 시리아로부터 육로와 해로로 수백 마일 떨어져 있는데 이스라엘은 그런 간격을 쉽게 차단할 수 있다. 이런 병참 상황은 개전 첫날부터 심각한 위험에 처할 것이다.
