SEOUL -- The self-sponsored debut of three Japanese AV (adult video) actresses as a K-pop girl band in South Korea has caused mixed feelings in a society built on a strong base of conservative social ideologies. AV is a less straightforward term used in Japan to describe pornography.
Yua Mikami, Miko and Sakura made their debut as Honey Popcorn, a cute, fairy-like concept girl band, with "Bibidi Babidi Boo" The group's YouTube music video has attracted more than 428,000 curios fans in less than 24 hours.
The debut triggered an unexpected online debate. Some embraced the group's entry into the K-pop scene, but other web portal users expressed awkwardness or anger. "Go home! Do you think South Korea's entertainment industry is an easy place for people like you?," wrote Yodaforce, a Daum portal user.
YouTubers generally welcomed the rookie group. "Controversy aside, the song is pretty good," said Olivia Hyessyd. Another user, Fire Goddess, said the group is just doing what it likes. "Just because someone makes adult content doesn't make them a bad person."
