Background overview: A young lady visited the hospital for the fracture of her hip joint that she sustained when she slipped and fell. Her surgery will take place tomorrow. The doctor is discussing about the surgery and the consent form with the patient’s father.
상황: 젊은 여성이 넘어지면서 고관절에 골절이 생겼다. 수술이 내일 예정이고 의사가 와서 수술에 대한 설명과 동의서를 작성하는 과정이다.

F: Doctor, my daughter is in a lot of pain. Can you give her some more painkillers?
아버지: 선생님, 우리 아이가 많이 아파하고 있습니다. 진통제 좀 더 해도 될까요?
D: I might be able to increase the dosage by switching her to a safer painkiller. Now, let me explain the surgery she’ll be getting tomorrow. She has sustained a major fracture, and her hip is badly disjointed. She will have to go under general anesthesia, but it may cause complications after the surgery.
의사: 네, 알겠습니다. 이미 진통제는 사용하고 있지만 안전한 약으로 더 사용하도록 하겠습니다. 제가 수술 과정에 대해서 간단히 설명하겠습니다. 지금 현재 골절이 있고 뼈가 제 위치에 있지 않아서 큰 수술이 예상됩니다. 또 전신마취를 해야 하기 때문에 수술 후 여러 가지 합병증이 예상이 됩니다.
F: But I guess there is no way other than this surgery, right?
아버지: 수술을 안 할 수는 없겠지요?
D: I am just telling you all the possible effects of the surgery, no matter how remote they are. I wouldn’t worry too much. We will do our best to prevent any unfortunate outcomes. As a doctor, though, I must tell you that general anesthesia may lead to respiratory infections, such as pneumonia, and fevers. The operated part may also contract infections or develop hemorrhage.
의사: 저희는 만약의 경우를 대비하여 생길 수 있는 모든 상황에 대해 설명을 드리는 것이니 너무 심려하지는 마십시오. 하지만 의료진이 최선을 다해서 미연에 방지를 할 것입니다. 전신마취로 인한 호흡기 감염, 특히 폐렴이 발생할 수 있고 이후 발열과 같은 증상이 있을 수 있습니다. 수술 부위에 출혈, 감염 등이 있을 수 있습니다.
