Samsung Electronics Co. will supply Tesla Inc. with its next-generation automotive artificial intelligence (AI) chipset, the AI5, giving a lift to the company’s struggling foundry business.
During Tesla’s third-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, local time, Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk confirmed that both Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) will produce the AI5 chips. The comment came in response to a question about Tesla’s semiconductor production contracts.
Samsung currently manufactures Tesla’s AI4 chips at its Pyeongtaek plant in Gyeonggi Province, Korea. The AI5 generation was originally planned for exclusive production by TSMC starting in 2026, while the subsequent AI6 chips are scheduled to be made at Samsung’s Taylor, Texas facility beginning in 2028. Musk’s latest remarks indicate that the AI5 will now be produced concurrently at Samsung’s Taylor fab and TSMC’s Phoenix fab in Arizona.
In July, Musk announced that Samsung would supply AI6 chips worth 23 trillion won ($16 billion) through its foundry operations. That earlier deal helped ease investor concerns about Samsung’s foundry business and contributed to a rebound in its stock price.
Industry insiders noted that Tesla’s latest confirmation of additional foundry orders strengthens Samsung’s position as a key partner for the automaker and underscores the deepening relationship between the two companies.
