(Christmas tree)

1510년 전나무에 처음 장식을 하기(first decorate a fir tree in 1510) 시작한 사람은 독일의 복음 전도자 마틴 루터(German evangelist Martin Luther)였다. 영국 빅토리아 여왕의 독일 태생 남편 앨버트(Queen Victoria’s German-born husband, Albert)공이 1840년 무렵 크리스마스트리를 장식하는 전통을 영국에 들여왔다(bring the tradition of decorating a tree for Christmas into UK in around 1840). 실제 나무가 아닌 인조 트리(artificial tree)는 애디스 컴퍼니에 의해 1930년대에 개발됐다(be invented in the 1930s by the Addis Company). 화장실용 브러시 생산공장에서 여분의 기계로 만들어진(be manufactured using spare machines in their toilet-brush factory) 것이 최초다.

-캐롤송(carols)

‘캐롤’이라는 단어(the word ‘carol’)는 춤 또는 찬양과 기쁨의 노래라는 뜻이다(mean dance or song of praise and joy). 최초의 캐롤은 겨울 동지(冬至)를 기념하는 비기독교도들의 노래(pagan songs to celebrate the winter solstice)였다. 캐롤은 한때 사계절 내내 불리웠으나(be once sung during all four seasons), 크리스마스에 부르는 전통만 남게 됐다(only the tradition of singing them at Christmas has survived).

-크리스마스 카드(Christmas cards)

최초의 크리스마스 카드는 1843년 런던 소재 빅토리아·앨버트 박물관의 헨리 콜 관장에 의해 보내졌다(be sent in 1843 by Sir Henry Cole, head of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London). 편지를 쓰기에는 너무 바쁜 나머지(too busy to write letters) 한 아티스트에게 1000장의 카드를 디자인하게 한(have an artist design 1000 cards) 뒤 앞 면에 축제 장면 삽화를 넣고(illustrate with a festive scene on the front) ‘메리 크리스마스 앤드 해피 뉴 이어 투 유’라는 인사말을 인쇄(print with the greeting ‘A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You)했다.

-산타클로스(Santa Claus)

우리 모두가 아는 빨간 옷의 산타클로스(the red-suited Santa we all know)는 1935년 코카콜라 광고 캠페인용으로 만들어진(be created in 1935 for a Coca-Cola advertising campaign) 것이다. 그 이전의 산타클로스는 수호성인이 된(become the patron saint of children) 서기 4세기 터키의 성(聖) 니콜라스 주교를 모델로 한 더 홀쭉하고 창백한 캐릭터(a thinner and paler character based on a 4th century Turkish bishop, St Nicholas)였다. 네덜란드에선 신터클라스로 알려졌고(be known as Sinterklaas in Holland) 크리스마스 선물을 나눠주는 것으로 명성을 얻어갔다(earn his reputation for giving away Christmas gifts).

-칠면조(turkey)

칠면조를 먹기 이전에 대중적이었던 크리스마스 요리(the popular Christmas dishes)는 거위와 수평아리(goose and cockerel)였다. 부자집에선(in the houses of the rich) 공작과 백조(peacock and swan)를 먹었다. 칠면조는 15~16세기에 아메리카대륙으로부터 유럽에 유입됐다(be introduced into Europe from the New World in the 15th and 16th centuries). 비싸지 않은데다 빨리 살이 쪄서(be inexpensive and quick to fatten) 이내 크리스마스 축제 요리로 인기를 얻기(soon rise in popularity as a Christmas feast food) 시작했다.

-양말(stockings)

12세기에 프랑스 수녀들은 가난한 사람들에게 금을 나눠줬다는(give gold to the poor) 성 니콜라스의 전설에 영감을 받아(be inspired by the legend of St Nicholas) 가난한 이들의 집에 탕헤르오렌지와 견과류 등 과일이 가득찬 긴 양말을 전해주기 시작했다(begin leaving stockings full of fruit including tangerines and nuts at the houses of poor people). 긴 양말의 발끝 부분(the toe of the stocking)에는 건강을 기원하는 사과를 넣었고, 뒤꿈치 부분에는 당시 대단히 귀하고 값비쌌던(be very rare and expensive) 탕헤르오렌지를 넣어주었다고 한다.

-크리스마스 선물(Christmas presents)

크리스마스 날에 늘상 선물을 주고 받았던(exchange gifts on Christmas Day) 것은 아니다. 로마시대 때는(in Roman times) 새해 첫날이 돼서야 선물을 나눠줬었다(wait until New Year’s Day to hand out their presents). 그러다가 기독교가 확산되면서(as Christianity spreads) 대중들이 교회 지도자들의 불법화 노력에도 불구하고(despite efforts by church leaders to outlaw the practice) 크리스마스 날에 선물을 주고 받기 시작했다.

-반짝이 장식(tinsel)

최초의 대량생산 크리스마스 장식(the first mass-produced Christmas decoration)은 1600년대 유럽에서 만들어졌다(be made in Europe in the 1600s). 은(銀) 합금 박판(薄板)을 종이처럼 얇아질 때까지 해머로 두들겨 조각을 냈다(hammer sheets of silver alloy until they get paper-thin, then cut them into strips). 반짝이 장식은 촛불과 벽난로의 불빛을 반사하도록 만들어진(be designed to reflect the light from candles and fireplaces) 것이다.
