Samsung Electronic Co.’s Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has become the world’s bestseller in 5G league in September in a feat achieved just a month since release.

According to market tracker Counterpoint Research, Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra made up 5 percent of global 5G smartphone sales in September, becoming the bestseller in the 5G premium category. It made its global debut in late August. The Note 20 Ultra beat the P40 Pro, a 5G flagship smartphone by China’s Huawei, which was No. 1 bestseller in August. In September, the P40 Pro was pushed to No. 2, capturing a 4.5 percent market share.

Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S20 Plus came fourth with a 4.0 percent market share and its Galaxy Note 20 No. 8 with 2.9 percent in September, data showed.

Among top 10 5G smartphone models by sales market share, seven bore Chinese labels - Huawei P40 Pro No. 2, Huawei nova 7 No. 3 with 4.3 percent, Huawei P40 No. 5 with 3.8 percent, Honor 30S No. 9 with 2.8 percent. Budget 5G smartphones vivo ranked No. 6 and Oppo No. 7 and No. 10.

Samsung’s ascent came after the Korean smartphone giant has turned aggressive in releasing affordable 5G models, said Counterpoint Research, adding that the company is also “utilizing its global reach to improve its presence in the 5G market.”

“The Samsung Note 20 ultra is a great example of this. It has done well in its first month of launch, taking the top spot in the 5G list,” it added.

The industry tracker noted that Apple is expected to play a more important role in the future with the launch of its iPhone 12 series in October. It said that the launch “will prove to be an inflection point for 5G, upending the top 10 list a couple of months later.

Counterpoint Research, meanwhile, noted that global handset manufacturers are increasingly applying 5G technology to its budget smartphones, which will allow the price of 5G models to go down and their market share go up. It noted that application processor producers such as Qualcomm and Mediatek are introducing cheaper 5G chipsets, which will expand the market for more widely sought 5G phones.

In fact, data showed that over the past half year, 5G models increased significantly from 50 in the first quarter of this year to 200 in the third quarter. Sales of 5G models also jumped over 300 percent from the first quarter to third quarter.
