Necessity is the mother of invention, and the saying cannot better describe South Korea’s wireless carriers who have applied their world’s most advanced 5G network and digital solutions to address the country’s notorious dust pollution problems.
On Mar. 3, SK Telecom, the country’s top mobile carrier, upgraded its fine dust measurement mobile app dubbed Everyair which was first launched last October.
The app initially was able to provide fine dust forecasting for up to 48 hours ahead based on public data, but now can upload forecasting data for 92 hours in advance through team-up with Israel-based start-up BreezoMeter.
BreezoMeter established in 2012 analyzes weather information, satellite and traffic information, and fine dust data with its sophisticated machine learning algorithm to create refined data on outdoor air quality.
SK Telecom has installed air quality measurement sensors in over 900 dealerships nationwide and indoor and outdoor base stations. On top of it, the company mobilizes various moving sensors for data collection in partnership with Yakult Korea and Winix.
Sensors installed in 500 Yakult Korea delivery carts that roam around the country and palm-sized portable fine dust meters supplied by Winix contribute to improving the accuracy of data on neighborhood fine dust, SK Telecom said.

Air Map Korea is a mobile app run by KT Corp. to support the efforts to fight fine dust through IoT solutions and big data analysis. KT has established its measurement networks using its 2,000 public telephone booths, telecom poles, and base stations nationwide to provide air pollution information through the app and other service channels such as GiGA Genie and Olleh TV.
KT has closely established the gap between Seoul measurement centers around 1 km, allowing users to check the information of their local living zones, and is continuously managing infrastructure and data quality enhancement in collaboration with the Korean Society for Atmospheric Environment.
KT has narrowed the gap between measurement stations in Seoul to up to 1 km, allowing users to receive lifestyle information in nearby areas besides fine dust forecasting services. The company continues upgrading its infrastructure and data quality in collaboration with the Korea Society for Atmospheric Environment.
The fine dust information provided by KT is very accurate as it is measured at the height of actual human breathing, and it can measure the amount of fine dust every minute by using a light scattering method certified by the environment ministry.
This year KT plans to replace some 2,000 equipment with state-certified products. KT will invest another 10 billion won ($8 million) for the replacement and other projects to boost the ecosystem of fine dust-related industries. Ssangyong E&C, a local constructor, is applying KT’s Air Map Korea to its latest apartment to be available in early 2022.

LG Uplus provide fine dust information through its IoT-based air quality alarming service and in partnership with Weather I. Users can install a small cylindrical device which is 11 cm in diameter and 6 cm in height to measure fine dust, temperature, and humidity indoor.
The device compares the indoor and outdoor air quality to inform the user of a proper ventilation time. In particular, it is possible to automatically control an indoor air purifier to work when necessary in sync with the company’s IoT@home app and Uplus AI speaker equipped with AI platform Naver Clova.
